Niobrara River Guide

Within the vastness of the Great Plains , there is a river cradled within the Niobrara Valley that has sculptured its own beauty and carved a personality into 200-foot cliffs and grassy knolls.  It is a masterpiece in any season; from the colorful palate of summer’s canvas to winter’s rimrock frozen, blue-ice terraces. Running on the northern fringes of the Ogallala Aquifer, the waters of the Niobrara travel 6-9 miles an hour, and since they are spring-fed, drought does not affect flow like most other rivers.

Declared a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in May 1991, this region is considered the ecological center of the North American continent where six distinctive, major vegetation systems converge.  As the last ice age retreated 6,000 – 8,000 years ago, leaving its inhabitants isolated it created its own species of unique birds, mammals and plants.

Listed among the top ten canoeing rivers in the country, it plays host to over 90 waterfalls, the greatest of these, at nearly 70’, making its home in Smith Falls State Park .  Bison and elk still roam prairie borders at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, while free-ranging elk mingle with white tail and mule deer at the water’s edge.
